Obesity Management in Penang | CANVAS Medical Clinic

Weight treated as medicine, not a package — physician-led assessment, an individualised plan and scheduled review at Gurney Walk, George Town, with prescription therapy only where it is clinically indicated.

What is medical obesity management?

Obesity is a chronic medical condition, and it responds to being treated like one. Medical obesity management means assessing the whole picture — body composition, metabolic markers, the conditions that commonly travel alongside excess weight — and then building a plan with the tools that actually match what the assessment found. It is not a diet handed out at reception, and it is not a willpower problem being repackaged as a package.

At CANVAS Medical Clinic in George Town, Penang, the programme is physician-led from the first consultation through to maintenance. Some patients need prescription therapy; many do not. What everybody gets is an honest assessment, a plan built around their life rather than a template, and someone reviewing whether it is working.

Physician-led assessment Body composition & metabolic screening Individualised plan GLP-1 therapy where indicated Scheduled review Long-term maintenance

How the programme works

  1. Assessment. History, examination, body composition, waist circumference and blood pressure, with blood work where indicated — glucose or HbA1c, lipids, liver and thyroid function among them.
  2. Goals set with you. A realistic target agreed together, framed around health markers as well as weight, because a sustained five to ten per cent loss already changes the numbers that matter.
  3. The plan. Nutrition, activity and behavioural change as the foundation, with prescription therapy added where it is clinically appropriate and you consent to it.
  4. Review and adjust. Closer reviews early while the plan is tuned, spacing out as things stabilise — with the plan changed when your response says it should be.
  5. Maintenance. Planned deliberately, because keeping the loss is a different task from achieving it, and the one most unsupervised attempts lose.

What the programme includes

Built around how you actually eat, not an ideal week.

Matched to your starting fitness, joints and schedule.

Prescription therapy

GLP-1 and other medicines where clinically indicated.

Progress tracking

More than the scale — composition and health markers.

Coordinated care

Referral onward when something needs another specialist.

Who it's for

Medical obesity management may suit you if you:

  • Have struggled to lose weight, or to keep it off, through lifestyle change alone
  • Carry weight-related concerns such as blood sugar, blood pressure or cholesterol
  • Want a medical assessment before deciding what to do, not a package sold up front
  • Would rather be reviewed properly than handed a prescription and sent away
  • Are prepared to work on nutrition and activity alongside any medicine
  • Want maintenance planned rather than left to chance

Suitability, including for any prescription medicine, is a medical decision confirmed at assessment — treatment is not dispensed on request. Programmes are not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Results differ between individuals, and no responsible clinic can promise a specific figure in advance.

Where medication fits

Where a GLP-1 medicine is clinically appropriate, it is prescribed inside the programme rather than instead of it. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a weekly dual-receptor injection with the strongest average trial results; Wegovy (semaglutide) is a weekly injection with a deep evidence base; Rybelsus is oral semaglutide for patients who prefer to avoid needles.

Which one — or whether any — is a medical decision made with you at assessment, and it can change as you respond. Where body shape rather than body weight is the concern, body contouring is a different conversation, and our physicians will tell you which one you are actually having.

FAQ

Obesity management in Penang, answered.

It starts with a proper assessment: history, examination, body composition, waist measurement, blood pressure and blood work where indicated, including markers for blood sugar, lipids, liver and thyroid. From that picture your physician builds a plan — nutrition, activity, behavioural change and, where it is clinically appropriate, prescription medication — with scheduled reviews to keep it honest.
No. Medication is one tool among several and it is only prescribed where it is clinically indicated and you consent to it. Plenty of patients are managed without it. Where a GLP-1 medicine is appropriate, it is prescribed as part of the programme rather than handed over on its own, because the medicine works best supported by the rest of the plan.
That varies with your starting point, your medical picture, which tools are appropriate and how the plan fits your life, so we set a target with you rather than advertising a number. Clinically, a sustained loss of five to ten per cent of body weight already delivers meaningful improvements in blood pressure, blood sugar and lipids — which is often the more important goal.
Obesity is managed as a long-term condition, not a six-week course. Early reviews are closer together while the plan is being tuned, then space out as things stabilise. Maintenance matters as much as the losing phase, and it is where most unsupervised attempts come undone.
It is medical care. You are assessed by a physician, screened for the conditions that travel with excess weight, and treated with tools that require prescription and monitoring. We measure more than the scale, we adjust as your response tells us to, and nobody is sold a fixed package that ignores what the assessment found.
