HIFU vs Ultherapy in Penang:
What's the Difference?
Both use high-intensity focused ultrasound to lift and tighten without surgery. But there are meaningful differences between platforms, and one may suit you better than the other. Here's how we think about it at CANVAS.
What they have in common
Both HIFU and Ultherapy use High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) technology to deliver precise heat energy to the deeper structural layers of the skin — specifically the SMAS (superficial musculo-aponeurotic system), the same layer addressed in a surgical facelift.
By heating tissue to a precise focal point, they trigger a wound-healing response that gradually tightens collagen and stimulates new production. Results develop over 2–4 months and continue to improve.
Neither requires incisions, anaesthesia or significant downtime.
What sets Ultherapy apart
Ultherapy is the only non-invasive ultrasound lifting device currently cleared by the US FDA for lifting the brow, chin, neck and décolletage. It uses real-time ultrasound imaging — you can see exactly where the energy is being delivered during treatment.
This imaging means:
- The physician can confirm the handpiece is positioned correctly before firing
- Energy is delivered only to intended tissue depths
- Nerves and blood vessels can be visualised and avoided
Ultherapy is available in three depths: 4.5mm (SMAS), 3mm (dermis) and 1.5mm (superficial). This allows treatment to be layered across multiple tissue depths in a single session.
What sets HIFU devices apart
HIFU is a category of technology — many different devices use it, including the LinearZ and Ultraformer MPT available at CANVAS. These newer platforms have made significant advances in comfort and delivery speed.
LinearZ delivers focused ultrasound in a linear (line) pattern rather than point-by-point, covering more tissue per pass — often with improved comfort compared to older HIFU devices.
Ultraformer MPT is a Korean-developed platform that has been widely studied and offers a broad range of cartridge depths, allowing high customisation across different facial and body zones.
Most modern HIFU devices do not include real-time ultrasound imaging — treatments are guided by the physician's anatomical knowledge and the device's calibrated depth settings.
Comparison at a glance
| Feature | Ultherapy | Modern HIFU (LinearZ / Ultraformer) |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Focused ultrasound (US FDA cleared) | Focused ultrasound (various approvals) |
| Real-time imaging | Yes — you see the tissue during treatment | No — depth set by cartridge |
| Target depth | 1.5 / 3 / 4.5mm | 1.5 / 2 / 3 / 4.5mm (varies) |
| Treatment time | 60–90 minutes (full face) | 30–60 minutes |
| Comfort | Moderate — numbing recommended | Moderate — newer platforms often more comfortable |
| Downtime | Minimal — some redness and tenderness | Minimal — similar |
| Results timeline | 2–4 months, up to 12 months | 2–4 months, up to 12 months |
Which should you choose?
Honestly, for most patients, the right answer depends more on your anatomy, skin condition and treatment goals than on brand loyalty to one platform. Our physicians at CANVAS offer all three devices because different technologies suit different situations.
Ultherapy may be preferred when:
- You have specific, targeted lifting goals and want the security of real-time imaging
- You want the confidence of an FDA-cleared device with the longest published evidence base
- Precise visualisation of depth is particularly important for your anatomy
LinearZ or Ultraformer MPT may be preferred when:
- You want a faster treatment time with modern delivery technology
- You're treating body areas (abdomen, arms, thighs) where HIFU can also address fat
- Your physician assesses your anatomy is well-suited to a cartridge-depth approach
How CANVAS approaches ultrasound lifting
At CANVAS Medical Clinic in George Town, Penang, all ultrasound lifting treatments are performed by our LCP-certified physicians — not delegated to operators. We select the device and cartridge combination that best matches your skin, anatomy and lifting goals based on an in-depth consultation.
We also commonly combine ultrasound lifting with radiofrequency (RF) treatments to address different tissue layers in the same programme. The combination — often called "HIFU and RF" — is one of our most requested non-surgical rejuvenation protocols.
Results are gradual. We set realistic expectations at consultation and plan a follow-up to assess your response at three to four months.
